My headboard It was a door It used to be a moveable barrier To someone else’s house But then it changed But then it changed My libertarian friend He grew up poor He used to be a liberal Walking around barefoot with his hair in his face But then he changed But then he changed Saturdays forever Saturdays forever Love of mine I love you more Than a coconut could love a soybean Than a sloth could love a slow movie And that won’t change That won’t change Saturdays forever Saturdays forever Saturdays forever Saturdays forever

Mr. Scoot 02:46
Mr. Scoot was a vet And he served in god’s own army Defending the land that he loved From a jerk Who only acted like a jerk to someone else Now what do you think, about that? You can put your feet in the road and place your blame on the cars You can burn your house to the ground and place your blame on the stars I’m not here to help you find your way But you might as well realize That the only one hosing yourself is you I’ll write a song, about a song I’ve already written, years and years and years ago I’ll write a tribute to my greatness And I’ll call it my finest work Now what do you think, about that? You can put your feet in the road and place your blame on the cars You can burn your house to the ground and place your blame on the stars I’m not here to help you find your way But you might as well realize That the only one losing your keys is you But you might as well realize That the only one soiling your sheets is you But you might as well realize The only one fucking yourself is you

Good Man 01:57
I’m not a good man But I’m reliable in my faults You can time them like a train You can’t train them anytime And I’ll turn this goddamn car around And I’ll back it off a cliff Out of spite and hopeless devotion And I’ll kick your door until I knock it down And I’ll stomp it till my legs fall off Out of spite and hopeless devotion Stomp Stomp Stomp Stomp Stomp I’m not a bad man I lack the callous resolve I’m all cold sweats and buckled knees I’m all cold sweats and a pounding heart And I’ll turn this idle threat around And I’ll put it back away Out of fear and hopeless devotion Kick my own ass until I knock it down And then I’d stomp on it if my legs moved that way Out of fear and hopeless devotion Stomp Stomp Stomp

Symphony of clicks and knocks You've got the hardest part You've got the indivisible lot in this life I won't act like a gentleman 'Cause I aint no liar I won't be your Casanova When your house is on fire Catastrophe of beats and sounds You've got the hardest part You've got the indivisible lot in this life It is heard but it is rarely seen Bring it up to a slow boil So for once it is agreed Don't you dare tell a soul Don'tcha dig your heals in Don'tcha dig your heals in Don't be caught digging your own grave It is not okay There is no saving grace I won't act like a gentleman 'Cause I aint no liar I won't be your Casanova When your house is on fire I won't act like a gentleman 'Cause I aint no liar I won't be your Casanova When I'm spreading gasoline I won't act like a gentleman 'Cause I aint no liar I won't be your Casanova When your house is on fire I aint no liar I aint no liar I aint no liar I aint no liar

Sweet Maya 03:14
You can have your way And I’ll have mine And we’ll both get on like the end of times Oh, My sweet Maya We don’t have to fight We can just shut up And we’ll paint a pretty picture of what the other thinks Oh, My sweet Maya My sweet Maya Where did the clouds come from? My sweet Maya Is that where was the sun born? And my sweet Maya If you should die today My sweet Maya Is that where you’ll go? You live half your life And I’ll live half of mine And we’ll trade the rest in on a busted motor-home Oh, My sweet Maya We can tool around We can get lost out there And we’ll send back postcards in our own dead language Oh, My sweet Maya My sweet Maya Where did the clouds come from? My sweet Maya Is that where was the sun born? And my sweet Maya If you should die today My sweet Maya Is that where you’ll go?

Turncoat you feel Ecclesiastic You fall like water On the surface of the sun It’s no matter It’s no heartache Outside of the patio Beyond the bluffs Scatter my ashes Anywhere but Utah Scatter my ashes Anywhere but Utah Sweetmeat will stop Distracting You scatter like broken Glass roaches of the heart I can’t be bothered I can’t be tempted Not with eternal life Not with the cross Scatter my ashes Anywhere but Utah Scatter my ashes Anywhere but Utah

Faith Away 02:35
Your god and you make an awkward team That’s okay It’s okay, its okay, it’s okay. Your prophecies are shaking like your suburban stairs And that’s alright It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright The bible that you’re beating Was made in China by slave labor You lie to your kids about History and the world Because you got to feel right You gotta do it on the cheap Yeah, you have to fit in You can faith away anything All your sins, they all look the same And that’s alright It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright Some are ignored, the others yield beatings What the fuck? What kind of hell are you selling? The cross that you’re wearing Is covered in blood diamonds I can’t help but wonder How much your vanity costs in lives. Because you got to feel right You gotta do it on the cheap Yeah, you have to fit in You can faith away anything

Hey there little rabbit I want to talk to you I want to tell you how to live Like proper rabbits do Hey there naked rabbit You need to get a suit like me Keep running around in just your fur And someone's liable to see We can't have that We can't have that We can't have that going on Hey there little rabbit You need to get big like me You need to be able to tell all the little rabbits Going to throw them in the sea Hey there big rabbit Shut your fucking mouth You're hanging out in my briar patch Where all my friends can see We can't have that We can't have you We can't let you get away

We bathed outside in a washtub One day the Mormons came to pray We ate our meals around a cable spool One night the hearth tore my toe open and there were fights guns, blood and teeth you both wore the scars For the rest of your days there were fights guns, blood and teeth Plastic cars on cinderblock One day my sister ran away I chewed through bone when the chicken was gone One night the creek washed the bridge away and there were fights guns, blood and teeth you both wore the scars For the rest of your days and there were fights guns, blood and teeth you both wore the scars For the rest of your days there were fights guns, blood and teeth It's hard to say What we hit When we tried to fly But you can see its wounds Plain as day when we stop trying Mom and Dad never stopped drinking One day Dad nearly killed us all Two wheels in a ravine, driver’s door open One night Mom drove us away

Sometimes I find I get to thinking of the past. When we swore to each other then that our love would surely last. You kept right on loving, I went on a fast, Now I am too thin and your love is too vast. But I know from your eyes And I know from your smile That tonight will be fine, Will be fine, will be fine, will be fine For a while. I choose the rooms that I live in with care, The windows are small and the walls are bare, There's only one bed, there's only one chair; I listen all night for your step on the stair. But I know from your eyes And I know from your smile That tonight will be fine, Will be fine, will be fine, will be fine For a while. Sometimes I see her undressing for me, She's the soft naked lady love meant her to be And she's moving her body so brave and so free. If I've got to remember that's a fine memory. And I know from her eyes And I know from her smile That tonight will be fine, Will be fine, will be fine, will be fine For a while

about

Howdy fellow human. Thanks for having a look at Everything That Came Before. This album is really actually a double EP re-releasing our first two EP’s on one disc with a couple of newer tracks. The first four songs come from our debut EP, Times is Tough All Over. Songs five through ten come from our second EP Low Rent Monster. Songs eleven and twelve are one-off recordings that we really liked but that weren’t going to fit thematically or temporally onto our upcoming album.

1. Saturdays Forever

Times is Tough All Over was released in January 2011 and it was recorded and mixed as well as performed by Dan Sherwood with the exception of Saturdays Forever, which features Stephanie Sherwood on bass, Stamati Arakas on drums, and Ian Anderson on the guitar solo. Everything was recorded track by track in a spare bedroom with the same inexpensive microphone or with amp simulators.

Low Rent Monster was released in February 2013 and was recorded by Dan Sherwood, mixed by Dan Sherwood and Jack Campitelli at Fishtank Audio. It was also mastered by Jack Campitelli. It featured Dan Sherwood on guitars, harmonica, lead vocals and background vocals; Stephanie Sherwood on bass and background vocals, Seth Ellsworth on viola and background vocals, Stamati Arakas on drums and Brian Zeitler on keyboards.

Tracks one through four as well as eleven and twelve were mastered by Neil Turi at Amish Electric Chair Studios to sound more consistent with tracks five through ten. It was an unreasonable task and he got far closer than he should have been able to.
